Migrate a Maintenance Plan To A New Server in Microsoft SQL Server 2012

by on June 27, 2014

Maintenance Plans are simply Sql server integration services (SSIS) packages, and yes, they can be exported and imported.

Export a Maintenance Plan

SSMS > Connect dropdown > Integration Services (SSIS Engine)image

Integration Services > Stored Packages > MSDB > Maintenance Plans > right click plan > export package

Package Location > Select File System

Package Path > select location (I use a share drive)

Protection Level > do not save sensitive data > ok

OK

Import a Maintenance Plan

NOTE!: you will want to open the ssis .dstx file with sublime text editor or similar to change the servername (for some reason MS hard codes these instead of making them relative) and be sure to update the path you are saving your backups to and cleaning up.

Conclusion – It may be easier to just manually recreate 😦

SSMS > Connect dropdown > Integration Services (SSIS Engine)

Integration Services > Stored Packages > MSDB > Maintenance Plans > right click plan > import package
