Along with SQL Alerts, it is also recommended you create Notifications on all Jobs, both custom and Maintenance Plan related.

How to create a new Job Notification on Failure

1. Expand SQL Server Agent > Jobs

2. Right Click the job > Properties

3. Notifications Tab > Email > Select Operator (Help Desk or DBA)
