Install and Setup Adobe PDF iFilter on Miscrosoft Server 2008 R2 SP1 64 Bit Operating System

by on June 18, 2013

Installing Adobe Reader will automatically install PDF iFilter 32 bit version – in most cases, this is enough to accomplish what you need to do on the server and is a simpler approach.

However, in some cases, the 64 bit version may be needed, or you may be forbidden from installing Adobe Reader on a server or environment.

Install the Adobe .PDF iFilter

Install the PDF iFilter for 64 – download and run the .msi

Currently, the version is 11, but you can Google to see if there is a newer version of the iFilter, or what is required for your application.

NOTE: Many third party tools an extensions, such as Document Exchange (DMX) for DotNetNuke still rely on the older iFilter version 9, due to a way that adobe changed the functionality. If you can’t seem to get the ifilter to integrate with your application, try installing Adobe PDF iFilter 9!

Set Path Environment Variable

  1. Server > Start > Right Click Computer > Propertiesimage
  2. In System popup, click on Advanced System Settings (on left)image
  3. Advanced Tab > Environment Variables button (bottom)image
  4. Under System Variables, find and click on Path (or double click to open edit) > click on edit button to modify Path variableimage
  5. Add a semicolon and the path to the bin folder containing the iFilter

;C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 11 for 64-bit platforms\bin

So your new Path Variable may look like

C:\Windows\system32\inetsrv;C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer;;C:\Windows\system32;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\System32\Wbem;C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\v5.3;C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Web Platform Installer\;C:\Program Files (x86)\PHP\v5.4;C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 11 for 64-bit platforms\bin

You should now be able to index pdf files on the server!

if you continue to have issues:

do an iis reset

restart machine
