How to Move a Site In SharePoint WSS 2007 or MOSS 2007 with STSADM and the Site Content Manager

by on October 4, 2012

MOSS 2007

In order to use the site Content Manager you have to first enable Publishing Features on the Farm and Site Collection levels. If you do not want to do this, you can use the WSS method below, however this gives you a simple user interface to work in. It may also allow an high level SharePoint admin to delegate to someone with a lower level of access and/or knowledge.

NOTE: Publishing Features are not available in WSS

Then go to https://mysite/_layouts/Sitemanager.aspx to manage structure and content! site settings > manage content & structure

WSS 2007

In order to do the same thing in WSS, which has no publishing features, your best option is a script. This allows you a number of options, such as including security and the subsites being copied to the file as well. Because of this, it can be useful for creating a site structure “template” thas uses site/subsites within itself.

STSADM files are located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN

You must be a local Administrator on the server

Export/Import Reference

  1. On the SharePoint server > open command prompt as an administratorimage
  2. Uncheck Run this program with restricted accessimage
  3. In command prompt window, Navigate to the folder containing STSADM.exe file (right click on command prompt to paste address) EX. cd “C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\BIN”
  4. At command prompt: stsadm –o export –url http://mysite/path –filename exportfilename –includeusersecurity
  5. Find file ending in .cmp (ex. exportfilename.cmp) – this is your “export” file (should be in the 12/bin folder you navigated to)

Import

  1. Create a new site where you want the exported site to live NOTE: If the site is not the same originating site type, you will get an error
  2. On the SharePoint server > open command prompt as an administrator
  3. at command prompt: stsadm –o import –url http://mysite/newpath –filename exportfilename.cmd –includesecurity
  4. Take a look at your new site and make sure it is set up properly

NOTE: This will not remove lists in your newly created site. For example, if you removed “announcements” you will need to remove it again.
