How to Enable More Lookup Columns In SharePoint 2010 Views and List Items

by on April 13, 2012

This view cannot be displayed because the number of lookup and workflow status columns it contains exceeds the threshold (8) enforced by the administrator.

Change the setting on the Web Application

  1. Central Administration > Application Management > Manage Web Applications
  2. Click on the appropriate web application you want to change
  3. Ribbon > General Settings > Resource Throttlingimage
  4. In the popup window, change List View Lookup Threshold to the desired numberimage
  5. Your larger number of lookups should now work – this affects both Views and List Items!

NOTE: High numbers of lookups will slow performance of the SharePoint application due to resource intensive SQL lookups required, so keep the number of these items to a minimun, especially if you have high usage. You may want to consider which feilds can be removed and/or if you can restructure or consolidate tables.
