How to Make a Custom Site Template .STP Available for Root Sites in SharePoint 2007

by on August 8, 2011

There does not appear to be a simple way to do this via the interface. Below is the simplest solution I know of.

  1. Put the SharePoint Site Template (.STP) file on the c:\ drive of the server (or your appropriate drive)
  2. Start > Command Prompt
  3. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN
  4. Type in the following replacing the highlighted values with your own (NOTE: I do not know of a way to do this without resorting to console action. If there is a way to do this through the interface, please let me know.)
    • stsadm –o  addtemplate –filename c:\exercise.stp –title exercise
  5. The template should now be available when you create a root site for a web application in Central Administration
  6. When creating your root application, click on the “Custom” tab in the Site Template section
