How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 9 & Revert to IE8

by on May 24, 2011

Recently I installed IE 9 – Big mistake. While some bells an whistles have been added as well as some compliance with W3C standards, rounded corners were not worth the headaches.

Why revert to Interned Explorer 8?

  1. Does not integrate with SharePoint properly
  2. Does not integrate with SharePoint Designer properly
  3. Telerik editors & controls (such as those on DNN) do not work properly (this has something to do with the new way javascript is handled and is related to the jQuery issue)
  4. jQuery and other scripts do not run properly
  5. No Flash player yet available to IE9 users

How to Downgrade from IE9 to IE8

  1. Go to Control Panel > View installed updates (you can search from the textbox on your Windows start button popup)
  2. Find the IE 9 Update and click to select
  3. Click on the Uninstall button at the top of the list
  4. Follow the instructions – you will need to restart!

NOTE: While performing this operation, my pc froze on the “Operations are in progress, please wait.” screen. This may have been because it went into hibernate or because I turned off IE9 before I did the rollback, or both. Regardless, I did a hard reboot after 3 hours of this (hold the button for 5+ seconds until you hear the “shutdown” sound, all lights should go off). Restarted normally and everything is fine. Except for the minor heart attack I experienced due to not having a recent backup of my machine. Excuse me while I start it now…

  1. Could you elaborate on the integration issues between IE 9 and SharePoint/SharePoint Designer? That’s definitely something worth sharing!
