Add a Managed Path to a Web Application in SharePoint 2010

Managed paths help with creating a logical layout for a SharePoint Installation. Site Collections appear to be at the same stratification, but content can be split into multiple site collections and databases.

You can set the specific URL of the Site Collection upon creation, however it will begin with the name of the web app followed by a dropdown.

To add paths to the dropdown

Go to Central Administration > Application Management > Manage Web Applications

Select Web App by highlighting row >  Click on Managed Paths in ribbon

In popup under Add new path, type name into Path textbox

Select Type:

  • Wildcard inclusion – as many site collections as desired at that location
  • Explicit inclusion – only one site collection at that location

Click OK
